A Short History of Cold Bay

From WWII airbase to modern-day community.

Cold Bay grew rapidly during World War II as Fort Randall, a strategic base guarding the Aleutian chain. Traces of the era still dot the tundra, from Quonset foundations to gun emplacements.

Today Cold Bay is a small year-round community and an important logistics hub for the Aleutians East Borough.
